Welcome to Flax Bourton Church of England Primary School

There has been a school in Flax Bourton since 1859. It became a Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School in 1947. The school serves not only Flax Bourton but also the villages of Barrow Gurney and Failand, neither of which has its own school. Pupils also come to the school from Backwell, Long Ashton and South Bristol. Flax Bourton is an attractive village set in the Green Belt but only seven miles from the centre of Bristol. In 1996 the school completed the move to its present large site where, although still close to the centre of the village, it is bounded on three sides by open fields.

The school hall, built in 1996, is used for acts of worship, music and drama, indoor physical education, lunches and school performances. During 2004 this building was substantially extended to provide new classrooms for the Key Stage 2 children, a computer suite, a library area, a special needs room and office accommodation. An adjacent building, refurbished in 2006, houses the Reception and Key Stage 1 classrooms and a small group area.

The spacious, secure grounds incorporate a playground, a sports field, fixed play equipment and a conservation area.

Flax Bourton Primary School can admit up to 15 children per year. It offers continuity of education from age 4 to age 11, enabling a smooth and happy transition from infants to juniors. The small numbers facilitate a caring family atmosphere in which everyone knows everyone else and in which children naturally develop good relationship skills and become more confident.

The school currently has around 90 children, organised into four classes. Class sizes are small, enabling teachers to give more time and attention to each pupil.
